
Weekend Wrap: CIRC 2022 Features Outstanding Performances
For the second year in a row the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships took place in a virtual setting and saw many outstanding performances from both Canadian and international competitors.
This year’s CIRC, which all took place on Sunday, Jan. 30, saw 565 competitors from 150 clubs from across the globe race on Concept2 Model D ergometers over distances of 500m or 2000m. The indoor rowers competed in either open weight or light weight age categories from under-17 to 75 years. Canada had the most overall competitors with 372, with the United States coming in a distant second with 94. A total of 22 countries were represented by the competitors at the event.
Jan Cizek of the Czech Republic posted the fastest time of the weekend in the 2000m cross the finish line in a time of 5:55.6, while Matthew Stankiewitch of the United States posted the fastest time in the men’s 500m race coming in at 1:15.0 On the women’s side, the fastest 2000m time belonged to Sally Lancaster of Great Britain (7:04.0) and the fastest 500m time was owned by Var Gurriadottir Hansen (1:31.5).
Canadian athletes brought home a total of 54 medals on Sunday (13 gold, 18 silver, 23 bronze), with many Ontario-based rowers contributing to the medal count. Gold medal winners from Ontario-based clubs included Sarah Slattery (Brock University), who placed first in the Open Women’s 2000m in a time of 7:23.2, and Stella Bittman (Notre Dame Rowing) who won the U17 women’s race in a time of 7:14.2. Silver medalists from Ontario-based rowing clubs were Jasmine Carter (University of Toronto – Open W – 2000m), Makeda Harrison (St. Catharines Rowing Club – LW U19 – 2000m), Rae Ceccato (St. Catharines Rowing Club – W30 – 2000m), Janet Bolton (Hanlan Boat Club – W50 – 2000m), Anton Cooley (Notre Dame Rowing Club – LM U19 – 500m), Shane Willis (Peterborough Rowing Club – Open M – 2000m), and Sam Stewart (Brock University – M U23 – 2000m). Third-place finishers included Riley Richardson (Ottawa Rowing Club – W U19 – 2000m), Alessio Perco (Notre Dame Rowing Club – M U17 – 2000m), Liam Shapland (Notre Dame Rowing Club – LM U19 – 500m), Kayne Boyall (University of Guelph – M U23 – 500m), Stephen Harris (Brock University – LM U23 – 2000m), and Arthur Pearse (St. Lawrence Rowing Club – M75 – 2000m).
CIRC 2022 was a sanctioned qualifier for the 2022 World Rowing Indoor Championships. Athletes can submit race scores to qualify for WRICH competition, and the top-3 in the Americas qualified for the Final.
