Weekend Wrap: CU’s Cap Off Rowing Season
This weekend marked the end of the outdoor rowing season in Canada as the Canadian University Rowing Championships ran from Elk Lake in Victoria, BC. The national banners remained in BC as the University of Victoria claimed the women’s championship and the University of BC won the men’s championship.
The two-day regatta was hosted by UVIC and featured 21 university programs from across the country. A total of ten Ontario universities competed at the event, comprising 88 of the 151 total entries. The athletes competed in 14 medal events over the two days, with the Day 1 dedicated to time trials and Day 2 the finals for each event.
The highest placing Ontario program was the Brock Badgers men’s team, who placed second overall in the points standings. Brock’s men’s program has won four consecutive OUA Championships, and narrowly missed out on a national banner as their 107 total points were just six behind UBC for the top prize. On the women’s side, the two-time defending OUA women’s champion Queen’s Gaels finished in third place with 90 points behind UVic (119) and UBC (110).
UVic claimed the most overall medals at the event with 11 (2 gold, 5 silver, 4 gold) while UBC was second with ten (6 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze). Brock had the most from Ontario schools with seven (3 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), followed by Queen’s (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and Western (2 silver, 2 bronze) with four apiece. History was made at the event for two Ontario schools as the Waterloo Warriors and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks each won their first ever medal at a Canadian University Rowing Championship. Waterloo’s Leon Domagalski and Ahmet Gulsaran finished first in the men’s double to win an impressive gold medal, while Ontario Tech’s Kara Woodworth and Kierstyn Hawke claimed the silver in the women’s double. The Ottawa Gee-Gees (silver) and McMaster Marauders (bronze) were the remaining Ontario schools to reach the podium.
Brock’s Stephen Harris capped off an outstanding rowing career with the Badgers by winning the men’s athlete of the year award.
