Weekend Wrap: Domestic and International Regatta Highlights


The Row Ontario Masters Championship was one of three regattas to take place in Ontario over the weekend while the World Rowing Cup III was also held across the Atlantic in Lucerne, Switzerland.

On the domestic front, the Row Ontario Masters Championship was joined by the CanAmMex International Regatta and the CORA Championship regatta in a busy rowing weekend in Ontario. The Masters Championship ran on Sunday, July 10 from the North Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre. There were 14 Ontario clubs in attendance plus several from the United States as well. The Don Rowing Club had an outstanding day on the course, bringing home an event-high 17 medals. They claimed the most gold medals with ten, to go along with five silvers and two bronze. Next on the medal tally was the Georgian Bay Rowing Club with ten (6 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze) followed by the Leander Boat (3 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), Argonaut Rowing Club (4 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze), and South Niagara Rowing Club (1 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze) with eight medals apiece. Other Ontario clubs claiming medals included the St. Catharines Rowing Club (7), Hanlan Boat Club (6), Ottawa Rowing Club (4), Niagara Falls Rowing Club (3), Peterborough Rowing Club (3), Ridley Graduate Boat Club (2), Orillia Rowing Club (2), and Notre Dame Rowing Club (1).

The CORA Championship Regatta was hosted a day prior to the Masters Championships on Saturday, July 9 in St. Catharines. A strong field of over 300 entries from 16 clubs took part in the regatta, with the Argonaut Rowing Club leading the way with 63 entries, followed by the St. Catharines Rowing Club with 53. The action from Martindale Pond featured U17, U19, U23, senior, and masters races across all boat classes.

The first regatta of the weekend was the CanAmMex International Regatta, which ran from the Doug Wells Rowing Centre on Fanshawe Lake in London on Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9 and was hosted by the UWO Boat Club. National Federations from Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Bahamas competed in men’s and women’s junior singles, pairs, doubles, fours, quads, and eights. The United States earned the most medals with 14, followed closely by the Canadian team with 13, and Mexico with nine. The Canadian team, competing in their home waters, earned four gold, seven silvers, and two bronze. The four gold medals were won in the women’s quad (Clara Van Dyk, Alexandra Anderson, Madeleine Lauriault, Julia Teixeira), women’s single (Julie Teixeira), women’s double (Alexandra Anderson, Madeleine Lauriault) and men’s pair (Gunnar Platt, Adrian Breen).

The Canadian women’s eight had the top finish at World Rowing Cup III, bringing home the sliver medal. Racing on the Rotsee over the course of three days, the Canadian team earned a total of four A Final appearances, with Trevor Jones finishing fourth in the men’s single, and the men’s eight and women’s pair both finishing sixth. The women’s eight crew featured three members of the Tokyo 2020 gold medal winning team, Sydney Payne, Avalon Wasteneys and Kristen Kit. Gabrielle Smith, Jessica Sevick, Alexis Cronk, Cassidy Deane, Kirsten Edwards, and Morgan Rosts rounded out the silver-medal winning boat.
