Weekend Wrap: Henley Champions Crowned

The 138th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta wrapped up on Sunday after six days of competition on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines.

Over 1500 entries were submitted from 100 clubs from across North America for the event. The annual regatta began on Tuesday, Aug. 2 with heats and semi-finals for the first two days of competition. The first finals took place on Thursday afternoon and ran throughout the rest of the week until Sunday afternoon. Earning the most gold medals at the event was the University of Victoria and Cambridge Boat Club (USA), who tied with seven apiece. The St. Catharines Rowing Club and Ottawa Rowing were tops among Canadian clubs, earning five gold medals, which put them in a tie for the second-most overall gold medals with the California Rowing Club.

The Notre Dame Rowing Club also had a strong regatta, crossing the finish line in first place on four separate occasions. Other Ontario clubs earning gold medals included the Leander Boat Club (3), Don Rowing Club (2), Peterborough Rowing Club (1), Western University (1), and Kingston Rowing Club (1). Two boats representing Row Ontario also claimed gold medals as Leia Till and Maya Meschkuliet won the women’s championship pair in a time of 7:04.10 and the women’s championship eight earned the gold in a time of 6:10.69. Row Ontario had a total of six entries in the event which were comprised of athletes who will compete next week at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The first Royal Canadian Henley Regatta was hosted in 1880 as the first championship for the newly formed Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen. Over the next two decades, it changed venues often until St. Catharines became the host in 1903. Henley has been hosted on Martindale Pond every year it has run since then.
