Weekend Wrap: Mega Worlds Start in St. Catharines


The first day of the World Rowing Senior, U23, & Junior World Championships took place on Sunday at Martindale Waterways in St. Catharines.

Crews from around the world descended on St. Catharines for the Mega Worlds, which will run from Aug. 18-25. Seven Canadian boats hit the water on the first day of competition, with U23 lightweight single sculler Emerson Crick (UBC) the highest placing Canadian boat. Crick crossed the finish in third place in his heat and will compete later in the week, along with the remaining Canadian crews.

Meanwhile in Kenora, ON, the 119th North West International Regatta Association Championships took place over two days. The NWIRA Championships featured 468 entries from 13 clubs from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Minnesota and Ontario. The Thunder Bay Rowing Club was strongly represented at the event with 43 entries. The TBRC ranked fourth overall in the medal tally with 15 medals (5 gold, 8 silver, 2 bronze), behind three clubs from Minnesota. Minnesota Boat Club came in first overall with 40 medals, followed by the Minneapolis Rowing Club (35) and Long Lake Rowing Crew (19).
