Weekend Wrap: Mother’s Day Regatta Hosted in St. Catharines

High school rowers from around the province took part in the annual Mother’s Day Regatta on Sunday in St. Catharines.

The rowers competed on Martindale Pond throughout the day, racing in junior, senior and novice divisions across a wide variety of boat categories. The regatta featured a total of 284 entries from 39 high school programs, with many coming from the Niagara region. EL Crossley, from nearby Fonthill, ON, had the most entries with 33, as well as the most gold medals won with 19. The school’s rowers had a strong day on the water, winning 19 of 41 total finals in a strong display of their early season form with just three weeks to go until the CSSRA Championships.

Ridley College, competing on their home waters, won the second most gold medals with five, followed by Saint Paul CSS (Niagara Falls), Branksome Hall (Toronto), and Eden HS (St. Catharines) with three apiece. Other schools claiming a first place performance on Sunday were Blessed Trinity HS (Grimsby) with two, and Upper Canada College (Toronto), Saltfleet District Community (Hamilton), Havergal College (Toronto), Saint Michael CHS (Niagara Falls), Governor Simcoe SS (St. Catharines) and Westdale Community (Hamilton) with one each.

The high school rowing season in Ontario continues next weekend (May 18-19) with the South Niagara Invitational in Welland. In two weeks the action heads to London, ON for the London Western High School Invitational on May 25, and the following weekend high school rowers from across the country will descend on St. Catharines for the CSSRA Championships (May 31-June 2).
