Weekend Wrap: Records Fall at 2022 World Rowing Indoor Championships

Canadian indoor rowers made their mark over the weekend at the 2022 World Rowing Indoor Championships with performances that included new world records.

For the second year in a row the WRICH took place in a virtual setting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rowers competed on Feb. 25-26 from their home gyms or clubs on Concept2 ergs in race distances over 500m or 2000m. The event featured rowers from 66 countries from across the world and 30 Canadian rowers (10 men, 20 women).

Two of those Canadian rowers set new world records as Alida Kingswood (10:29.3) set the new standard in the women’s 90-94 2000m race and Delta, BC’s Richard Stout (6:50.2) achieved the record in the men’s 70-74 2000m division. For Kingswood, who lives in Woodstock, Ont., it was the second year in a row she set a world record after posting a new world’s best time last year in the 85-89 division.

“I wanted to leave a bit of a legacy for grandchildren, because I’m not a grandmother that bakes cookies for kids or does crafts,” said Kingswood (quote obtained by World Rowing).

Other Canadian medalists at the WRICH included Cameron Wharram (2nd place – Open Men – 500m), Nigel Roedde (3rd place – Masters 30-39 Lightweight Men – 500m), Brock University’s Stephen Harris (3rd place – U23 Lightweight Men – 2000m), Vanessa MacKinnon (3rd place – Masters 40-49 Lightweight Women – 500m), Sheila Findlay (3rd place – Masters 60-64 Women – 2000m) and Nora Strapps (2nd place – Masters 70-74 Lightweight Women – 2000m).
