Weekend Wrap: Summer Regatta Action Heating Up
A busy summer of rowing is now in full swing as the second weekend of July saw Ontario-based rowers compete at the CORA Regatta in Welland and members of Canada’s national team compete at World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland.
The CORA Regatta was held on the South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre on Saturday and featured a full day of action with almost 400 entries from the 20 participating clubs. The Central Ontario Rowing Association (CORA) is in its 70th year of operation after being inaugurated in 1953. The association currently has 24 Ontario clubs as its members, 18 of which participated on Saturday with the additional two clubs coming from south of the border.
The St. Catharines Rowing Club had a strong day on the South Course, earning 25 first place finishes over the course of the regatta. They were followed by the Don Rowing Club who were next with 15, the Leander Boat Club with 14, and the Notre Dame Rowing Club with 12. Rounding out the top-5 was Western University Rowing with eight victories.
CORA regatta action continues this weekend with the CORA Championships which take place on Saturday, July 15 from Martindale Pond in St. Catharines.
Meanwhile in Lucerne, the national team’s weekend was highlighted by a silver medal performance by the women’s eight in the team’s final regatta before the 2023 World Rowing Championships.
World Rowing Cup III began on Friday with preliminary heats and the action continued through until Sunday with the finals. The women’s eight launched a powerful surge over the final 500m to earn the silver medal, finishing just 0.7 seconds behind the gold medal-winning crew form Great Britain. They passed the Australian eight in the final 500m to take second place.
The men’s eight also qualified for the A Final and came home with a hard fought sixth place finish. The Canadian team sent a total of 13 boats to the starting line and earned ten top-10 finishes (see RCA’s full recap of the event here). The regatta was contested on the scenic Rotsee in Lucerne.
The 2023 World Rowing Championships will take place in Belgrade, Serbia from Sept. 3-10 on the Ada Ciganlija Regatta Course on Sava Lake.
