Weekend Wrap: The Tony B Runs from Welland


Row Ontario hosted its first regatta of 2026 on Saturday, as the Tony Biernacki Sr. Memorial Regatta took place from the North Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre.

Traditionally hosted by Brock University, the Tony B has been run by Row Ontario since 2022.  The ‘Tony B’, a masters-focused regatta, ran under blue skies and warm temperatures for the entirety of the event and featured 186 entries from 22 clubs from Ontario and the USA.

Topping the medal tally on the weekend was the London Western Rowing Club, which earned a regatta-high 16 medals, including eight gold, three silver, and five bronze. Next on the medal tally were the Ridley Graduate Boat Club and Argonaut Rowing Club with 13 apiece. The RGBC earned four gold, seven silver, and two bronze, while Argo’s, which had the most entries in the event with 26, tied for the most gold medals with eight, to go along with three silver and two bronze. Rounding out the top-five was the Hanlan Boat with nine medals (5 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze) and the West Side Rowing Club with eight (2 gold, 1 silver, 5 bronze).

Ontario clubs earning medals were the St. Catharines Rowing Club with seven (4 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze), Don Rowing Club with six (2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), South Niagara Rowing Club with five (1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), Georgian Bay Rowing Club with four (4 gold), Cambridge Rowing Club with two (1 gold, 1 silver) and Notre Dame Rowing Club with one (1 silver).

Masters rowers from across the province will be back on the North Course in just under a month for the RowOn Masters Championships on Sunday, July 12.

Meanwhile, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria the second World Rowing Cup of the season took place on the Plovdiv Regatta Course from June 12-14. Canada sent one boat to the start line at the event as the men’s four of Steven Rosts, Axel Eiger Ewashko, Curtis Ames and Ryan Clegg competed together for the second straight World Cup. After a fourth-place finish in their opening round heat, the quartet finished the event strong with a first-place finish in the B Final. They topped the USA and China in the final in a time of 5:52.44 for an overall seventh-place finish.
