Weekend Wrap: Variety of Rowing Events Take Place at Home and Abroad


The variety of events available in rowing were in full view this weekend as two head races took place in Ontario, the World Rowing Masters Regatta ran in Libourne, France and the 2022 World Rowing Tour began in Southeastern Ontario.

The Muskoka Fall Classic and the Head of the Madawaska kicked off the Fall head race season in Ontario. The Muskoka Fall Classic, which is hosted by the Georgian Bay Rowing Club, ran from its home on Gull Lake Rotary Park in Gravenhurst, Ont. on Saturday. Almost 200 competitors from 14 clubs participated in the 3km regatta, with the winners bringing home the always coveted jars of honey. The Leander Boat Club earned the most jars of honey, by winning nine races, followed by the Don Rowing Club with eight wins, and the Argonaut Rowing Club with seven. Other clubs whose rowers finished at the top of the podium were the South Niagara Rowing Club (4), the Hanlan Boat Club (2), McMaster University (2), the Georgian Bay Rowing Club (2) and the Barrie Rowing Club (1).

The Head of the Madawaska was hosted by the Burnstown Rowing Club and was run on the Madawaska River on Sunday. The regatta featured rowers from the Burnstown Rowing Club, Ottawa Rowing Club, Ottawa New Edinburgh Club, Georgian Bay Rowing Club and St. Lawrence Rowing Club. The competitors participated in either a 3km race or 4.5km race during the festivities in boats ranging from singles to eights. The regatta was run under perfect weather conditions, with no wind and temperatures in the mid to high twenties with a mix of sun and cloud.

The 50 participants in the World Rowing Tour started their trek in the Murray Canal and Bay of Quinte on Sunday. The participants will row for six days this week with a rest day in the middle, finishing up on Saturday after rowing through the spectacular Thousand Islands. A total of 12 countries will be represented in the tour, as participants from Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the USA will all take part. The World Rowing Tour is being organized by members of Ontario Adventure Rowing.

The 2022 World Rowing Masters Regatta ran for five days last week from Sept. 7-11. The competitors, which featured Ontario clubs, the Don Rowing Club, London Western Rowing Club, Leander Boat Club and Ridley Graduate Boat Club, raced on Dageueys Lake in the heart of Libourne, France. The regatta featured 4362 entries from 713 clubs representing 50 countries from around the world. The Calgary Rowing Club was the highest placing Canadian club at the event earning 297 points, good for eighth overall.
