Weekend Wrap: World Rowing Coastal Championships Features Ontario Rowers

While all was quiet in Ontario regatta circles as the fall rowing season took a break for Thanksgiving weekend, the action was fast and furious overseas as Ontario athletes represented Canada at the 2022 World Rowing Coastal Championships.

The event took place in Saundersfoot, UK from Friday to Sunday and featured seven medal events – CM1x, CM2x, CM4x+, CW1x, CW2x, CW4x+ and CMix2x. Sarah Pidgen of the Don Rowing Club pulled double duty competing in both the CW1x as well as the CMix2x with partner Aubrey Oldham of the Leander Boat Club. In the women’s single, Pidgen placed eighth in her heat in a time of 26:16.16 to qualify for the A Final, where she placed 10th in a time of 29:47.35. The slower race times in Sunday’s final can be attributed to the tough conditions the rowers raced in, brought on by a southerly breeze which created white caps in Saundersfoot Bay. Jessica Berra of France took home the gold in a time of 25.56.55.

In the CMix2x division, Pidgen and Oldham finished in seventh place in their heat in a time of 19:07.23. They followed that up with another seventh-place finish in the A Final, coming across the line in a time of 23:11.59. Ander Martin Domingo and Esther Briz Zamorano of Spain earned the gold medal in a time of 21:46.53. The Canadian CM4x+ crew also competed over the weekend, taking home first place in the B Final in a time of 16:28.67 after finishing in tenth place in their preliminary heat. The crew of Anthony Ciaccia, Simon Whittaker, Caelan Weber-Martin, and Michael Bryenton were representing the Kingston Rowing Club.
