Trillium Sprints 2019
The seventh Trillium Chase Challenge, the Trillium Sprints, took place October 19th in Hamilton, Ontario.
The Trillium Sprints is a 500m single elimination format regatta. Scullers raced a 500m Time Trial to start the day, which seeded them into the bracket. Scullers then raced head-to-head 500m races, with the winner advancing through the Championship Bracket until an overall winner was determined.
St. Catharines Rowing Club athlete, Chris Blackwood, returning to the dock after being eliminated from the third round of racing
With a frosty start to the morning, the sun quickly appeared as the scullers took to the water at the Leander Boat Club. This year’s Trillium Sprints saw 20 athletes from 6 different Ontario rowing clubs. The first race of the day was the men’s time trial, where LBC athlete, Aubrey Oldham, came away with the top spot in a time of 1:47.67. On the women’s side, Jane Thornton of the University of Western Ontario Boat Club claimed first, with a time of 2:01.72. In winning the men’s and women’s time trials, Aubrey and Jane got a bye in the first round of knock-out races. Full time trial results can be found HERE.
As the knock-out brackets progressed, Aubrey found himself facing off against fellow LBC athlete, James Sinclair, for the championship bracket. In a tough last race, Aubrey took the top male spot, beating out James. On the women’s side, Jane found herself against Leander athlete, D’Arcy Arends, in the championships bracket. The final race of the Trillium Sprints saw Jane claiming the win on the women’s side. There were some tight races throughout the elimination rounds, as athletes of all ages went head-to-head.

Following the regatta, athletes, volunteers and umpires were invited to join a fundraising BBQ at the boat house, in support of Canadian athletes attending the World Rowing Beach Sprints. Both Aubrey and D’Arcy will be representing Canada at the event October 25th – 27th in Shenzhen, China. We wish the entire Canadian team good luck in the regatta!
With one more Trillium Chase challenge left, the Trillium Indoor 6km, the female and male leaderboards have been updated. Make sure you take a look to see where you stack up. Trillium Cup winners (female and male) as well as all age category winners will be awarded their prizes at the ROWONTARIO AGM, November 30th, in Mississauga, ON.
