Weekend Preview – Indoor Rowing Events Highlight Last Weekend of February

Indoor Rowing will be at the forefront this weekend as one national and one global event will be the focus of rowers across Canada and the world.

The second ever Coast-to-Coast Indoor Rowing Day in Canada will take place on the domestic front on Saturday, Feb. 26. The goal of Indoor Rowing Day in Canada is to log enough kilometres on the erg to travel from coast-to-coast and create a wave of indoor rowing featuring photos and videos on social media as the day moves through the time zones across Canada. The event will begin at 9:00 am in Newfoundland and Labrador, then spread west from there.

There is still time for clubs to participate in this unique indoor rowing event. Find out all the details on how to participate on our website below:

On the international front, the 2022 World Rowing Indoor Championships will take place in a virtual setting for the second year in a row. Originally scheduled to take place in Hamburg, Germany as a hybrid event with both in person and virtual rowing, the Hamburg Organizing Committee and the World Rowing Executive Committee made a decision to convert the event to fully virtual due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The first World Rowing Championship of 2022 will feature rowers from 66 countries competing in individual races over distances 500m or 2000m, as well as team races featuring men’s, women’s and mixed teams. Many of the competitors qualified to compete at the event by placing in a continental qualification event, which were held from Aug. 15 to Feb. 2. The 2022 Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships, which took place on Sunday, Jan. 30 was a sanctioned qualifier for the event.

There will be 35 Canadian athletes (13 men, 22 women) taking part in the WRICH, with many hailing from Ontario. The full list of Canadian athletes competing can be found below. The action will start on Friday, Feb. 25 and wrap up on Saturday, Feb. 26.
