Weekend Preview: NRC’s Start on Friday at Quamichan Lake
The RCA National Rowing Championships kick off tomorrow from Quamichan Lake in Duncan, BC. The national regatta will see rowers from across the country compete on Friday and Saturday for the national championship crown in men’s and women’s singles, pairs, and lightweight singles.
The regatta will be hosted jointly by RCA and Maple Bay Rowing Club on Quamichan Lake. The venue is the new home of the RCA National Team and has hosted regattas many times in the past, but this year will be the first time a regatta of this scale has been hosted in the heart of the Cowichan Valley. Over 200 entries have been submitted for the event from 45 clubs and organizations from across the country. Rowers will compete for either their home province or club at the regatta.
Row Ontario will have 35 boats representing the provincial organization at the regatta, including several members from RCA’s National Team. In the open single, national team members Trevor Jones, Daniel de Groot, Gavin Stone, and Joshua King will compete on the men’s side while Jennifer Casson, Elisa Bolinger, and Shannon Kennedy will race on the women’s side. Jill Moffatt will compete in the women’s lightweight single for Ontario and Luke Gadson/Ryan Clegg and Rebecca Zimmerman/Morgan Rosts will compete in the men’s and women’s pair respectively. Jakub Buczek, Cody Bailey, Sydney Payne, Cassidy Deane, and Alexis Cronk will also represent Row Ontario as part of a composite pair with an athlete from another province. Many more of the country’s most experienced and top NextGen athletes will be competing for Row Ontario as well, including athletes who currently train out of the Ontario NextGen Performance Centre.
